Austrian confesses to abusing daughter for 24 Years

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Tuesday, April 29, 2008 0 comments
An elderly Austrian, portrayed by media as a "monster", confessed on Monday to imprisoning his daughter in a cellar for 24 years and fathering her seven children, prosecutors said.

Josef Fritzl, 73, "has admitted building the dungeon and to holding his daughter and three children there," prosecution spokesman Gerhard Sedlacek said.

Fritzl also admitted incest "but insisted there was no force involved," said Sedlacek. One of the children died at an early age.

Fritzl was scheduled to be brought before an investigating magistrate on Monday evening and face several more days of questioning over the case which has shocked Austria.

Fourteen police meanwhile scoured the three cramped underground rooms in the family house in Amstetten, eastern Austria, where Elisabeth Fritzl and her children were held prisoner.

She has alleged she was drugged by her father in August 1984 and had been his prisoner ever since. All seven children were born in the "dungeon".

The six surviving children are three boys and three girls aged between five and 20.

The rooms, measuring "50-60 square metres in all" and with a ceiling just 1.70 metres (5.5 feet) high were "furnished like a flat", Sedlacek said.

Lower Austria police chief, Franz Polzer, said there was "a wide range of questions that still need answering" such as how Fritzl supplied the woman and children with food, how the babies were born and cared for in such cramped conditions, and how he could have incarcerated his victims for so long without his wife knowing.

It is the latest in a series of horror abuse cases to have stunned Austrians and newspapers asked how authorities could again have failed to detect the woman.

The case came to light when one of the children, now 19, was admitted to hospital in critical condition.

Doctors looking for background information stepped up efforts to find the mother. The whole horrific story came to light when Fritzl allowed them to establish contact with his daughter.

The Oesterreich tabloid featured a six-page special report on what it termed as "the worst crime of all time." "How can this happen here?" asked Die Presse .

"Amstetten is in a state of shock," wrote mayor Herbert Katzengruber on the town's website. "Our thoughts and feelings are with the victims."

DNA tests are being carried out to establish if Fritzl is the father of the six surviving children. The seventh child, a twin, is believed to have died shortly after birth and the body subsequently burned, police said.

The Kronen-Zeitung tabloid portrayed Fritzl as a keen fisherman, popular among neighbours and locals, but a "monster, a brutal tyrant" in the cellar of his own home.

He legally adopted two of the boys and one girl, allegedly telling his wife, Rosemarie, and local authorities that three babies had been left by Elisabeth on their doorstep, in different years.

Each delivery was accompanied by a letter purportedly signed by Elisabeth Fritzl saying she could not support the child because she already had others to care for.

The trio went to school as normal, seemingly unaware that their mother and three other siblings (a girl of 19, and boys at 18 and five) were trapped underground.

Neither neighbours nor social services appear to have had any inkling, either.

"They had a swimming pool in the garden, we would hear them laughing the three of them," said one neighbour.

Another backed up the story of the babies on the doorstep, adding: "(Rosemarie) always looked after the kids so well, taking them to school. We said 'it's incredible what she manages to do at her age'."

Elisabeth Fritzl told investigators her mother knew nothing about the sexual abuse she had endured since the age of 11, some seven years before she was locked away.

Austria's most notable prior case was that of Natascha Kampusch, locked up by a man in the basement of a house for eight years before she escaped.

Kampusch was 10 when Wolfgang Priklopil abducted her on her way to school in 1998. The 44-year-old kidnapper killed himself hours after she fled, throwing himself under a train.

Three young girls were also locked up for seven years by their mentally ill mother near Linz.

Million dollar garments made of gold coins in Tokyo(4 IMAGES)

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Monday, April 28, 2008 0 comments

Bling, bling and more bling………….where is all this blinging leading to? Here’s one more paradigm of the latest trend from the Midas Kingdom. Take a look at the outfits that were fitted with more than 1,500 Austrian gold coins! Designed by students from a Tokyo design school, Bunka Fashion College, the outfits were shimmering and the models looked like fishes with dazzling golden scales! The coins were lent by the Austrian Mint Office and worth more than $1.2 million. They were sewn onto three pieces of apparel - a full-length dress weighing 10 kg (22 pounds) and two jackets weighing up to 21 kg (46 pounds)

The coins were sewn onto the clothes in a locked room within the college campus, where the teachers kept a constant watch. “I felt the weight of the task as I sewed on each piece, coin by coin,” said student Yuko Imauji. However if you are planning to create one for yourself then, lemme warn you that recently Gold prices have hit a 28-year high as the dollar dropped. Spot gold hit a high of $799.30 an ounce, its highest since January 1980.

Quantum Computers and D-Wave System

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Sunday, April 27, 2008 0 comments

What are Quantum Computers??

A quantum computer is a hypothetical device for computation that makes direct use of distinctively quantum mechanical phenomena, such as superposition and entanglement, to perform operations on data. In a classical (or conventional) computer, information is stored as bits; in a quantum computer, it is stored as qubits (quantum bits). The basic principle of quantum computation is that the quantum properties can be used to represent and structure data, and that quantum mechanisms can be devised and built to perform operations with this data.[1]

D Wave Systems-Who are they??

D-Wave Systems is the world's first and only source of quantum computing for commercial applications. We believe quantum technology in concert with classical, digital processors, can and will represent broad and significant advancements in the application of computer science.

In February 2007, D-Wave unveiled and demonstrated this technology publicly for the first time. The company plans to deliver field-deployable systems in 2008.

On November 12 2007,D-Wave Systems puts the world’s first commercial quantum computer on display in an online demonstration here this week at the prestigious SCO7 Conference -- an international gathering of technologists and computer scientists focused on high performance computing, networking, storage and analysis.

The company introduced its revolutionary 16 qubit machine last February in Silicon Valley, California. “Advancing the machine to 28 qubits in such a short space of time lends credibility to our claim of having a scaleable architecture” stated Herb Martin, D-Wave’s CEO. “Our product roadmap takes us to 512 qubits in the second quarter of 2008 and 1024 qubits by the end of that year. At this point we will see applications performance far superior to that available on classical digital machines.”

D-Wave claims that in June 2009 the on-line quantum computing service will be available for “Monte Carlo” simulation targeted at pricing and risk analysis in the Banking and Insurance community. This will be followed by a quantum simulation capability for chemical, material and life science applications.

WHY I FIRED MY SECRETARY??

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Saturday, April 26, 2008 0 comments
Two weeks ago was my 35th birthday and I wasn't feeling too hot that morning anyway.

I went to breakfast knowing my wife would be pleasant and say "Happy Birthday" and probably a present for me.

Forget "Happy Birthday", She didn't even say "Good Morning".

I thought, "Well, that's wives for you, the children will remember".

Children came in to breakfast and didn't say a word.

I started to the office I was feeling pretty low.

As I walked into my office my secretary, Janet, said, "Good morning, boss. Happy Birthday."

And I felt a little better; someone had remembered. I worked until noon.

Then, Janet knocked on my door and said, "You know,
it's such a beautiful day outside and it's your birthday, let's go to lunch, just you and me."

I said,! " That's the greatest thing I've heard all day. Let's go." We went to lunch.

We didn't go where we normally go; we went out to the country to a little private place.

We had two martinis and enjoyed lunch tremendously.

On the way back to the office, she said, "You know, it's such a beautiful day.

We don't need to go back to the office, do we?"

I said, "No, I guess not."

She said, "Let's go to my apartment." After arriving at her apartment,

she said, "Boss, if you don't mind, I think I'll go change."

"Sure," I excitedly replied. I start getting excited & i thought today is my lucky day.

She went into the bedroom and, in about six minutes,

she came out carrying a big birthday cake, followed by..........

my wife, children, and dozens of our friends, all singing "Happy Birthday".

And there I sat... on the couch... naked....!!!!!!

Why is Google algorithm so Important?

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Wednesday, April 23, 2008 0 comments

Google's search engine gets more traffic than any
other Web site. So what's the company's secret
algorithm? No one can be sure.

The GOOGLE algorithm

algorithm does the work for you by searching out Web pages that contain the keywords you used to search, then assigning a rank to each page based several factors, including how many times the keywords appear on the page. Higher ranked pages appear further up in Google's search engine results page (SERP), meaning that the best links relating to your search query are theoretically the first ones Google lists.

For Web page administrators, being listed prominently on Google can result in a big boost in site traffic and visibility. In 2007, Google surpassed Microsoft as the most visited site on the Web.

Are You Down with ODP?
The Open Directory Project (ODP) is a Web directory maintained by a large staff of volunteers. Each volunteer oversees a category, and together volunteers list and categorize Web sites into a huge, comprehensive directory. Because a real person evaluates and categorizes each page within the directory, search engines like Google use the ODP as a database for search results. Getting a site listed on the ODP often means it will show up on Google.

Google's keyword search function is similar to other search engines. Automated programs called spiders or crawlers travel the Web, moving from link to link and building up an index page that includes certain keywords. Google references this index when a user enters a search query. The search engine lists the pages that contain the same keywords that were in the user's search terms. Google's spiders may also have some more advanced functions, such as being able to determine the difference between Web pages with actual content and redirect sites -- pages that exist only to redirect traffic to a different Web page.

Keyword placement plays a part in how Google finds sites. Google looks for keywords throughout each Web page, but some sections are more important than others. Including the keyword in the Web page's title is a good idea, for example. Google also searches for keywords in headings. Headings come in a range of sizes, and keywords in larger headings are more valuable than if they are in smaller headings. Keyword dispersal is also important. Webmasters should avoid overusing keywords, but many people recommend using them regularly throughout a page.

PageRank system

The Google algorithm's most important feature is arguably the PageRank system, a patented automated process that determines where each search result appears on Google's search engine return page. Most users tend to concentrate on the first few search results, so getting a spot at the top of the list usually means more user traffic.

So how does Google determine search results standings? Many people have taken a stab at figuring out the exact formula, but Google keeps the official algorithm a secret. What we do know is this:

* PageRank assigns a rank or score to every search result. The higher the page's score, the further up the search results list it will appear.
* Scores are partially determined by the number of other Web pages that link to the target page. Each link is counted as a vote for the target. The logic behind this is that pages with high quality content will be linked to more often than mediocre pages.
* Not all votes are equal. Votes from a high-ranking Web page count more than votes from low-ranking sites. You can't really boost one Web page's rank by making a bunch of empty Web sites linking back to the target page.
* The more links a Web page sends out, the more diluted its voting power becomes. In other words, if a high-ranking page links to hundreds of other pages, each individual vote won't count as much as it would if the page only linked to a few sites.
* Other factors that might affect scoring include the how long the site has been around, the strength of the domain name, how and where the keywords appear on the site and the age of the links going to and from the site. Google tends to place more value on sites that have been around for a while.
* Some people claim that Google uses a group of human testers to evaluate search returns, manually sorting through results to hand pick the best links. Google denies this and says that while it does employ a network of people to test updated search formulas, it doesn't rely on human beings to sort and rank search results.

Can't Buy Me (Google) Love

Google says that it won't sell prime search results spots. Every site you see in the results section on a Google SERP is there because of the PageRank system. Google does sell space for sponsored links above and next to the search results, but it uses shaded boxes and borders to alert users to the difference between normal search results and sponsored links.

Is President Putin getting married?

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Friday, April 18, 2008 0 comments

Russian president Vladimir Putin, known for keeping his private life out of public gaze barring a bare-chested hunting photo or two, is to marry a gymnast less than half his age, a news report said on Thursday.

Moscow is ablaze with rumours that Putin, 56, and the flexible 24-year-old Alina Kabayeva have decided to tie the knot, Daily Telegraph of Britain reported.

Alina Kabayeva , the Russian MP rumoured to be President Putin’s love interest, was born in 1983 in Tashkent. She represented Russia at both the Sydney and Athens Olympic Games. She has also appeared in an action film and posed in daring photographs as a model.

Kabayeva has made it to parliament as a member of Putin’s Unified Russia Party, became deputy head of the State Duma Committee on Youth Affairs and chaired the supervisory board of the National Media Group, Russia’s new media-holding owned by Yury Kovalchuk, who is a close friend of the Putins.

The London daily quoted the Russian newspaper Moskovski Korrespondent as saying that the couple are to marry mid-June, a little more than a month after the Kremlin boss steps down as Russian president.

One website even claimed that the pair had been seen kissing in a Moscow restaurant, the report said.

Russian newspapers went so far as to compare the potential union with the wedding of French president Nicolas Sarkozy with former supermodel Carla Bruni.

The Kremlin, however, has kept mum on the reports while Kabayeva’s spokeswoman denied the rumours and said the former gymnast and Playboy model would sue the paper if a retraction was not published.

Though the former KGB spy has not officially announced the separation from his 50-year-old wife, Ludmilla, he is reported to have split from her two months ago, the report said. La Repubblica, another Russian paper, however, said Putin had divorced his wife at a registry office in his home town of St Petersburg, where the marriage reception is reportedly planned.

The Koresspondent had published the rumours, citing a party planner in St Petersburg who claimed to be bidding to organize the couple’s lavish wedding reception.

UNICEF’s Photo of the Year Contest

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Friday, April 18, 2008 0 comments
The annual UNICEF Photo of the Year Contest once again in 2007 left millions speechless, inspired, shocked, and enticed into action.

This years winning image looks harmless at first, a man and a young girl sitting side by side, that is until you realize this is not a photo of a father and daughter, but an engagement photograph. The by photographer Stephanie Sinclair, is of a 40-year-old groom sitting beside his 11-year-old future bride, taken last year in Afghanistan. The legal age to wed for a girl in Afghanistan is 16, however child marriages are still common in many areas. Sinclare, asked the child bride what show she felt, she responded, “Nothing, I do not know this man. What am I supposed to feel?”. According to UNICEF some 60 million children are forced to enter into marriages before they are of legal age, half of which are in South Asia. The problem of child brides is the greatest in Rajasthan, India, where 15% of girls are under 10 years old when they married. Child marriages lead to higher instances of domestic violence and early pregnancies, which leave girls at high risk for death in childbirth, complications, and low birth weights.

The second place photograph was of a a 12 year-old boy working in a Bangladeshi brickyard, taken by photographer GMB Akash, of Bangladesh. UNICEF estimates that 4.7 million children between five and 14 years of age are involved in child labor in Bangladesh alone, and some 246 million children aged 5-17 worldwide are involved in full-time labor. Children involved in child labor have little to no access to an education, and therefore their escape from the factories, fields, etc becomes very limited, in addition many children are malnourished and ripe for additional exploitation

The third-place photograph by German photographer Hartmut Schwarzbach, shows a 9 year old girl jumping in on a junked chair in the middle of a landfill outside of Manila, the day happens to be the young girls birthday. The girl is one of the children who live in the nearby charcoal burners’ camp with her family, and like the other children she spends her days in search of wood among the rubbish in th dump. The children in camps such as this are malnourished and lack education, leaving them to continue in the cycle of poverty, with little chance of escape from dumps that consume their days.

Honorable Mentions

Crimes and their results
“The soldier came at night. He said I was not the first he had raped. He was brutal. He pierced my leg with a spear and then raped me for four hours. He came again on six nights in a row. Why I love the first daughter more is because I gave birth to her as a result of love. The father was my husband. The second girl is a result of an unwanted circumstance (rape).”
Joseline I.* (37, HIV+) with her daughter Leah B.* (12)

“I never loved the child. I have to force myself to love him. But he makes it impossible. He behaves like a street child. He is a bad boy. I don’t tell him that I don’t love him. It’s in his blood…”
Claudin M.* (26) and her son Jeandediue U.* (12)

“When I was pregnant, I wanted to die. I tried to kill myself. Then I became afraid. I thought about having the baby and then killing it. But when he was born, I immediately loved him. He was so beautiful. I could not kill him. I will always love my son.
Annasalie M.* (34, HIV+) and her son Prince R.* (12, HIV+)

For his project, Jonathan Torgovnik wanted to find 50 women who were raped during the Rwandan genocide 13 years ago and who gave birth to a child as a result of that rape.

Life in Gaza

For years now, raids, death and destruction have been a part of everyday life in the Gaza Strip, Palestine. On 10 April 2006, bombs destroyed a house in the city of Beit Lahiya in the Northern part of the region. An eight-year-old child was killed in the attack and a further 13 children between the age of 1 and 17 were severely wounded.

UNICEF supports schools, youth centers and kindergartens in Palestinian areas, in order to get kids off the streets. The aim is to provide space for fun and games amidst the everyday violence - space for peace education and learning, providing the young generation with better perspectives to solve conflicts peacefully. In light of the dramatic development in 2007, UNICEF also sent pharmaceuticals and vaccines against measles, mumps, rubella and tuberculosis to the Gaza Strip to prevent an outbreak of dangerous diseases among the children. In addition, UNICEF campaigned to preserve and maintain the drinking water supply for the population who were literally cut off from the outside world. Two out of three families in Gaza live below the poverty line. In the Palestinian areas, 10% of all children are stunted due to chronic malnutrition.

The photographer Hatem Moussa grew up in the Gaza Strip and has been working there since 1998. His pictures show the effects of the ongoing conflict on the civilian population

Death Mask of Tutankhamun

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Wednesday, April 16, 2008 0 comments
The death mask of Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun is made of gold inlaid with colored glass
and semiprecious stone. The mask comes from the innermost mummy case in the pharaoh’s
tomb, and stands 54 cm (21 in) high. The emblems on the forehead (vulture and cobra) and
on the shoulders (falcon heads) were symbols of the Two Lands of Upper and Lower Egypt
and of divine authority. The vulture Nekhbet and the cobra Wadjet protected the pharaoh.

COFFINS

Tutankhamun's mummified body was found within three coffins or sarcophagi, each one
within the next. The largest is still in the original tomb in the Valley of the Kings along with
his mummy, but the other two are here. This is the middle coffin, made of wood covered
with gold, semiprecious stones, glass and obsidian.
The inner coffin is made of solid gold and weighs 110 kilograms (which at 2004 prices
makes the gold by itself worth over one and a half million US dollars).

The Egyptian Vulture
The Egyptian vulture is a tool-using bird. Egyptian vultures are specialists in egg-eating.
They are among the only known birds in the world to use stones as tools. They will
repeatedly strike at an abandoned ostrich egg with stones, then use their beak to enlarge
the hole and penetrate membrane. Then it feasts on the oozing interior of the egg. In ancient
Egypt the vulture is considered to be nearer to God who is believed to reside above the sky.

The Egyptian Cobra
The ancient Egyptians worshipped the cobra and used it as a symbol on the crown of the
pharaohs. It is used as a protective symbol, the Egyptians believed that the cobra would spit
fire at any approaching enemies. It is also called asp.

100-yr ticket stumps railways

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Wednesday, April 16, 2008 0 comments

Sixty-year-old Gopal Dey has a ticket to ride but nowhere to go. The tailor from Kadamtala in Howrah has a Kolkata-Jamshedpur train ticket — dated June 28, 2073.

Dey has Indian Railways in a fix. Taking advantage of a rule that once allowed passengers to buy advance tickets without any time limit, Dey booked a ride on the Tata Express as a practical joke in 1973. Of course, Dey never expected to use the ticket. He plans to hand over the ticket to his daughter and hopes his grandson can use it.

The railways does not know what to do with the ticket since the rule has been scrapped long ago.

It was a railway notification that sparked the idea. "It said passengers could reserve their seats without any time limit. I wondered, why not buy a ticket 100 years before the date of journey," said Dey.

On June 28, 1973, Dey queued up at a Howrah booking counter near the boro ghari (which no longer exists). The man at the counter rolled his eyes in disbelief when Dey asked for a ticket to travel 100 years later. "He thought I had lost it. I showed him the notification, but he didn't relent," recalled Dey.

Railway officials said it made no sense since he won't be able to use the ticket, but Dey didn't give in. "Since they had said passengers could book tickets for any date in advance, they were bound to issue the ticket," said Dey. After a day-long deliberation, the authorities relented and the ticket was issued. The fare? A princely Rs 9.75.

Dey has preserved it in a box in a bedroom cabinet. His neighbours know about his prized possession and people often come to see the unusual ticket.

"I never take it out of my house. I won't be able to travel with it, but my grandchild might. It will be a unique journey of which I, too, will be a part," Dey said.

Railway officials don't know what to do with the ticket. "We are supposed to maintain Dey's reservation record manually since computerization had not begun when he booked the ticket. It is indeed a unique case," said Samir Goswami, senior PRO of Eastern Railway.

Did Americans really land on Moon???

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Monday, April 14, 2008 0 comments
Apollo Moon Landing hoax accusations are claims that some or all elements of the Apollo Moon landings were faked by NASA and possibly members of other involved organizations. Some groups and individuals have advanced various theories which tend, to varying degrees, to include the following common elements:

* The Apollo Astronauts did not land on the Moon;
* NASA and possibly others intentionally deceived the public into believing the landing(s) did occur by manufacturing, destroying, or tampering with evidence, including photos, telemetry tapes, transmissions, and rock samples;
* NASA and possibly others continue to actively participate in the conspiracy to this day.

Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong in NASA's training mock-up of the Moon and lander module. Hoax proponents say the entire mission was filmed on sets like this training mock-up.

Predominant Hoax Claims:

A number of different hoax theories have been advanced. No one has proposed a complete narrative of how the hoax could have been perpetrated, but instead believers focus on perceived gaps or inconsistencies in the historical record of the missions. Several of these ideas and their most readily identifiable proponents are described below:

1.Complete hoax — The idea that the entire human landing program was faked. Some claim that the technology to send men to the Moon was insufficient or that the Van Allen radiation belts, solar flares, solar wind, coronal mass ejections and cosmic rays made such a trip impossible.

2.Partial hoax / unmanned landings — Bart Sibrel has stated that the crew of Apollo 11 and subsequent astronauts had faked their orbit around the Moon and their walk on its surface by trick photography, and that they never got more than halfway to the Moon.

3.Manned landings, with cover-ups -William Brian believes that the astronauts may have used "a secret zero gravity device" derived from technology found on a "captured extraterrestrial spaceship," but that NASA was compelled to cover up these facts and others relating to the gravity and the presence of atmosphere on the moon in order to maintain secrecy surrounding the alien space ship

4.Actual lunar landing - faked filming –Advocates of this theory state that the equipment used to photograph (Hasselblad cameras privately modified by NASA) had no protection for the film against radiation nor intense lighting conditions present on the moon and in space

earthrise photos. The Flat Earth Society used these photos as evidence of a faked landing, since they show a spherical Earth.

Technological capability of USA compared with the USSR

At the time of Apollo, the Soviet Union had five times more manned hours in space than the US. They had achieved:

1. First manmade satellite in orbit ,First living creature to enter orbit
2. First to safely return living creature from orbit, two dogs Belka and Strelka, 40 mice, 2 rats
3. First man in space
4. First man to orbit the Earth
5. First to have two spacecraft in orbit at the same time
6. First woman in space
7. First crew of three cosmonauts on board one spacecraft
8. First spacewalk

On January 27, 1967, the three astronauts aboard Apollo 1 died in a fire on the launch pad during training. The fire was triggered by a spark in the oxygen-rich atmosphere used in the spacecraft test, and fueled by a significant quantity of combustible material within the spacecraft. Two years later all of the problems were declared fixed. Bart Sibrel believes that the accident led NASA to conclude that the only way to 'win' the moon race was to fake the landings

degraded image after the SSTV scan conversion

Evidence by Photographs and Films
1. Crosshairs appear to be behind objects.
2. Crosshairs are sometimes misplaced or rotated.
3. The quality of the photographs is implausibly high
4. There are no stars in any of the photos. The Apollo 11 astronauts also claimed in a press
conference after the event to have not remembered seeing any of the stars.
5. The color and angle of shadows and light are inconsistent.
6. Identical backgrounds in photos are listed as taken miles apart.
7. The number of photographs taken is implausibly high. Up to one photo per 50 seconds
8. The photos contain artifacts like the two seemingly matching 'C's on a rock and on the
ground.
9. A resident of Perth, Australia, with the pseudonym "Una Ronald", said she saw a soft
drink bottle in the frame.
10. The book Moon Shot contains an obvious composite photograph of Alan Shepard hitting a
golf ball on the Moon with another astronaut.
11. There appear to be "hot spots" in some photographs that look like a huge spotlight was
used at a close distance.
12. Footprints in the extraordinarily fine lunar dust, with no moisture or atmosphere or
strong gravity, are unexpectedly well preserved, in the minds of some observers – as if made
in wet sand.

Now You decide.....

Google gains from Yahoo-Microsoft takeover drama

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Saturday, April 12, 2008 0 comments

Microsoft's unwanted courtship of Yahoo is spinning into a dramatic soap opera that analysts say is playing into the hands of Internet search king Google.

While the US software giant says Google's dominance online is the reason it is eager to buy Yahoo, the California firm's efforts to stave off Microsoft leave Google free to concentrate on strengthening its grip on the market.

"Our big take-away now is that as the situation gets more muddled with more participants and more uncertainty, it seems to solidify Google's standing in the industry," Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Derek Brown told AFP.

A series of Yahoo maneuvers aimed at rebuffing Microsoft were announced or leaked this week, while the software giant may also be upping its game.

On Thursday a report surfaced that Microsoft is exploring an alliance with News Corporation owned by Rupert Murdoch.

Terms of a possible deal include News Corp. contributing cash to help Microsoft buy Yahoo, and then adding its popular social networking website MySpace to the resulting Internet entity.

Such an alliance would be an abrupt change of sides for News Corp., which was among possible "white knights" that Yahoo reached out to for salvation after Microsoft came on strong with a 44.6-billion-dollar offer February 1.

News Corp. also has a long-term deal with Google to host online advertising at MySpace.

Yahoo, meanwhile, is apparently seeking help from longtime rival Google, whose dominance in Internet advertising is among the reasons Yahoo's share of the market have been eroding.

Yahoo announced Wednesday it will launch a limited, two-week test of Google's AdSense for Search service, which essentially means it will be checking how much better Google is at generating cash from online advertising.

Analysts agree that a significant alliance between Google and Yahoo would be squashed by US regulators because the companies combined would control some 90 percent of the online search ad market.

"The company that would clearly want to come to the rescue is Google but they know the regulators would just go nuclear if they did that," Gartner analyst Van Baker said.

Unofficial word has spread that Yahoo is also nearing a deal with Time Warner's America Online to combine the two struggling companies' Internet operations and thwart Microsoft's takeover effort.

Time Warner would reportedly merge AOL into Yahoo and pay for a 20 percent ownership of the combined company.

Yahoo would reportedly use the cash to buy back shares from some of the very stockholders Microsoft is threatening to woo in an effort to have Yahoo's board of directors ousted and replaced with people amenable to the takeover.

Silicon Valley analyst Rob Enderle agrees that Google benefits while its two closest rivals duel but says that Google might have reason to worry.

Microsoft has a 1.6 percent stake in fast-growing social networking website Facebook. A tie-up with MySpace, while a bit awkward, would give Microsoft footholds in two top social networking properties.

If Yahoo makes an alliance with AOL and then is bought by Microsoft, the combined resources span a formidable swath of hot websites.

"Microsoft and Yahoo might not be a threat to Google, but you throw Murdoch in the mix and that is a credible threat," Enderle said. "The chance Microsoft could pull it off could be what keeps Google up at night. It's scary."

Microsoft is betting that by combining with Yahoo, it can gain ground on Google.

"I think Yahoo genuinely doesn't want to merge with Microsoft," Baker said.

"They think it will be bad for the employees and bad for the industry, and I don't disagree with that."

Yahoo on Monday rejected a three-week deadline from Microsoft to accept the takeover but said it is open to a sweetened bid from the software giant or another bidder.

"I think this is inevitable," Baker said of a Microsoft takeover of Yahoo.

"I'm just very concerned Microsoft will screw it up and we will end up with Google controlling 90 percent of the ad business anyway and that Yahoo culture is going to evaporate."

Miss USA 2008 Grand Finale (IMAGES)

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Saturday, April 12, 2008 0 comments

Miss Texas Crystle Stewart holds a bouquet of flowers after being crowned Miss USA 2008 at the Planet Hollywood hotel and casino in Las Vegas, Nevada April 11, 2008.

Top 5(L-R): Leah Laviano of Mississippi,Tiffany Andrade of New Jersey,Crystle Stewart, Texas,Lindsey Jo Harrington,Laurn Merola of Pennsylvania

26-year-old entrepreneur from Texas was named Miss USA on Friday, besting 50 other beauty queens for the coveted crown.

Crystle Stewart, of Missouri City, Texas, runs a party-planning and motivational speaking company, as well as modeling professionally. She says she wants to dedicate her life to international philanthropy.

She edged out first runner-up Leah Laviano of Mississippi and Tiffany Andrade of New Jersey.

Miss USA 2007 Rachel Smith relinquished the crown -- and the posh New York apartment that comes with it -- in a show aired live by NBC with hosts Donny and Marie Osmond from the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. The network co-owns the parent Miss Universe Organization with Donald Trump.

Smith, a former Miss Tennessee USA, said she was headed to Hollywood.

Contestants from all 50 states and the District of Columbia have been in Las Vegas for nearly three weeks, rehearsing and hyping the 57th annual pageant. After stints in Baltimore and Los Angeles, organizers billed the new venue as a city beloved by the event's international audience.

The pageant tried to showed off its edge, featuring a grinding live rock performance by the band Finger Eleven, music from Rihanna, and contestants in barely there black bikinis and faux-fur coats.

Donny and Marie kept up a steady stream of sibling banter even while swiftly whittling the field.

Donny Osmond told the losers to "put on a poker face" as he sent them home.

"Or use Botox; then it won't move," Marie quipped.

Stewart will compete in the Miss Universe pageant in Vietnam in July. She also becomes a spokeswoman for breast and ovarian cancer awareness and other causes, while traveling to promote the organization.

Miss USA contestants are scored in three categories: swimsuit, evening gown and interview. Miss Alaska USA, Courtney Erin Carroll, was chosen "Miss Photogenic USA" based on voting at the organization's Web site. The other contestants named Miss Ohio USA, Monica Day, "Miss Congeniality." Unlike the rival Miss America, Miss USA contestants are not asked to perform a talent.

Smith's year on the throne has been marked by fewer racy headlines than her 2006 predecessor, Tara Conner. Conner's underage drinking landed her in rehab and sparked a media circus documenting her fall from grace.

Smith's low point was a fall onstage during the evening gown competition of the Miss Universe pageant in Mexico City. She was booed by the crowd and Miss Japan won the title.

A bigger blunder this year belonged to Miss California USA organizers. The judges crowned the wrong queen in their November contest and reversed it days later, saying Raquel Beezley, of Barstow, was the victim of a vote tabulation error. Dethroned Miss Los Angeles, Christina Silva, a Hispanic woman, has filed a lawsuit alleging racial bias.

The panel of judges for Friday's pageant included Heather Milles, model and former wife of Paul McCartney; comedian Rob Schneider; Olympic gold-medal swimmer Amanda Beard; and Christian Siriano, winner of Bravo's fashion reality series, "Project Runway."

Top 10 Unsolved Mysteries

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Friday, April 11, 2008 2 comments
1. Shroud of Turin

The shroud of Turin is a linen cloth bearing the image of a man who had apparently died of crucifixion. Most Catholics consider it to be the burial shroud of Jesus Christ. It is currently held in the Cathedral of St John the Baptist in Turin, Italy. Despite many scientific investigations, no one has yet been able to explain how the image has been imprinted on the shroud and despite many attempts, no one has managed to replicate it. Radiocarbon tests date it to the middle ages, however apologists for the shroud believe it is incorrupt - and carbon dating can only date things which decay.

Prior to the middle ages, reports of the shroud exist as the Image of Edessa - reliably reported since at least the 4th century. In addition, another cloth (the Sudarium) known even from biblical times (John 20:7) exists which is said to have covered Christ’s head in the tomb. A 1999 study by Mark Guscin, a member of the multidisciplinary investigation team of the Spanish Center for Sindonology, investigated the relationship between the two cloths. Based on history, forensic pathology, blood chemistry (the Sudarium also is reported to have type AB blood stains), and stain patterns, he concluded that the two cloths covered the same head at two distinct, but close moments of time. Avinoam Danin (a researcher at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem) concurred with this analysis, adding that the pollen grains in the Sudarium match those of the shroud.

2. Mary Celeste

Mary Celeste was launched in Nova Scotia in 1860. Her original name was “Amazon”. She was 103 ft overall displacing 280 tons and listed as a half-brig. Over the next 10 years she was involved in several accidents at sea and passed through a number of owners. Eventually she turned up at a New York salvage auction where she was purchased for $3,000. After extensive repairs she was put under American registry and renamed “Mary Celeste”.

The new captain of Mary Celeste was Benjamin Briggs, 37, a master with three previous commands. On November 7, 1872 the ship departed New York with Captain Briggs, his wife, young daughter and a crew of eight. The ship was loaded with 1700 barrels of raw American alcohol bound for Genoa, Italy. The captain, his family and crew were never seen again. The ship was found floating in the middle of the Strait of Gibraltar. There were no signs of struggle on board and all documents except the captain’s log were missing.

In early 1873, it was reported that two lifeboats grounded in Spain, one with a body and an American flag, the other containing five bodies. It has been alleged that these could have been the remains of the crew of the Mary Celeste. However, the bodies were apparently never identified.

3. The taos hum

The ‘Taos Hum’ is a low-pitched sound heard in numerous places worldwide, especially in the USA, UK, and northern europe. It is usually heard only in quiet environments, and is often described as sounding like a distant diesel engine. Since it has proven indetectable by microphones or VLF antennae, its source and nature is still a mystery.

In 1997 Congress directed scientists and observers from some of the most prestigious research institutes in the nation to look into a strange low frequency noise heard by residents in and around the small town of Taos, New Mexico. For years those who had heard the noise, often described by them as a “hum”, had been looking for answers. To this day no one knows the cause of the hum.

4. Black Dahlia

In 1947 the body of 22 year old Elizabeth Short was found in two pieces in a parking lot in Los Angeles. According to newspaper reports shortly after the murder, Short received the nickname “Black Dahlia” at a Long Beach drugstore in the summer of 1946, as a play on the then-current movie The Blue Dahlia. However, Los Angeles County district attorney investigators’ reports state the nickname was invented by newspaper reporters covering the murder. In either case, Short was not generally known as the “Black Dahlia” during her lifetime.

Many rumours and tales have spread about the Black Dahlia, and the investigation (one of the largest in LA history) never found the killer.

5. Comte de Saint Germain

The Count of St. Germain (allegedly died February 27, 1784) was a courtier, adventurer, inventor, amateur scientist, violinist, amateur composer, and a mysterious gentleman; he also displayed some skills with the practice of alchemy. He was known as ‘Der Wundermann’ — ‘The Wonderman’. He was a man whose origin was unknown and who disappeared without leaving a trace.

Since his death, various occult organizations have adopted him as a model figure or even as a powerful deity. In recent years several people have claimed to be the Count of St. Germain. (Note that St Germain was never regarded as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church - the “st.” before his name refers to his alleged home).

Just paying the bills...

6. Voynich manuscript

The Voynich Manuscript is a medieval document written in an unknown script and in an unknown language. For over one hundred years people have tried to break the code to not avail. The overall impression given by the surviving leaves of the manuscript suggests that it was meant to serve as a pharmacopoeia or to address topics in medieval or early modern medicine. However, the puzzling details of illustrations have fueled many theories about the book’s origins, the contents of its text, and the purpose for which it was intended.

The document contains illustrations that suggest the book is in six parts: Herbal, Astronomical, Biological, Cosmological, Pharmaceutical, and recipes.

7. Jack the Ripper

In the later half of 1888, London was terrorrised by a series of murders in the east end (largely in the Whitechapel area). The name Jack the Ripper was taken from a letter sent to a newspaper at the time by someone claiming to be the killer. The victims were typically prostitutes who had their throats cut and bodies mutilated. In some cases the bodies were discovered just minutes after the ripper had left the scene.

The police at the time had many suspects but could never find sufficient evidence to convict anyone. In modern times there has even been some speculation that Prince Albert Victor was the murderer. Even with modern police methods, no further light has been shed on the murders in recent times. To this day no one knows who the ripper was.

8. Bermuda Triangle

The Bermuda triangle is an area of water in the North Atlantic Ocean in which a large number of planes and boats have gone missing in mysterious circumstances. Over the years many explanations have been put forward for the disappearances, including bad weather, alien abductions, time warps, and suspension of the laws of physics.

Although substantial documentation exists to show that many of the reports have been exaggerated, there is still no explanation for the unusually large number of disappearances in the area.

9. The Zodiac Killer

The Zodiac killer was active in Northern California for ten months in the late 1960s. He killed at least five people, and injured two. He comitted the first two murders with a pistol, just inside the Benecia border. In his second shooting in Vallejo, he attempted to kill two people, but one survived despite gunshots to the head and neck. 40 minutes later the police recieved an anonymous phone call from a man claiming to be their killer and admitting to the murders of the previous two victims. One month three letters were sent to Newspapers in California containing a cypher that the killer claimed would give them his name. They cypher was decrypted to read:

“I LIKE KILLING PEOPLE BECAUSE IT IS SO MUCH FUN IT IS MORE FUN THAN KILLING WILD GAME IN THE FORREST BECAUSE MAN IS THE MOST DANGEROUE ANAMAL OF ALL TO KILL SOMETHING GIVES ME THE MOST THRILLING EXPERENCE IT IS EVEN BETTER THAN GETTING YOUR ROCKS OFF WITH A GIRL THE BEST PART OF IT IS THAE WHEN I DIE I WILL BE REBORN IN PARADICE AND THEI HAVE KILLED WILL BECOME MY SLAVES I WILL NOT GIVE YOU MY NAME BECAUSE YOU WILL TRY TO SLOI DOWN OR ATOP MY COLLECTIOG OF SLAVES FOR MY AFTERLIFE EBEORIETEMETHHPITI” The last eighteen letters have not been decrypted.

While Arthur Leigh Allen was the prime suspect, all of the evidence was against him being the killer. To this day the Zodiac murders have not been solved.

10. The Babushka Lady

During the analysis of the film footage of the assasination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, a mysterious woman was spotted. She was wearing a brown overcoat and a scarf on her head (the scarf is the reason for her name as she wore it in a similar style to Russian grandmothers - also called babushkas). The woman appeared to be holding something in front of her face which is believed to be a camera. She appears in many photos of the scene. Even after the shooting when most people had fled the area, she remained in place and continued to film. Shortly after she is seen moving away to the East up Elm Street. The FBI publically requested that the woman come forward and give them the footage she shot but she never did.

In 1970 a woman called Beverly Oliver came forward and claimed to be the Babushka Woman, though her story contains many inconsistencies. She is generally regarded as a fraud. To this day, no one knows who the Babushka Woman is or what she was doing there. More unusual is her refusal to come forward to offer her evidence.

Manned Cloud - The Floating Hotel

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Friday, April 11, 2008 0 comments
TRAVELING AROUND THE WORLD ON A FLOATING HOTEL might be possible by 2020.French designer, Jean-Marie Massaud, has been working in conjunction with the French National Office of Airship Research on the project since 2005.
The airship is a floating hotel called the Manned Cloud.

It will cruise at a speed of 80 mph (130 km/h) and 18,000ft above sea level. It could circle the earth in about ten days.

It will travel for 3,100 miles (almost 5,000 km) before needing to be refueled.
It is an ecologically friendly way to travel, leaving little impact on the environment without the need for hotels, according to the promoters. It could land for a few days or for a week if there is a big event going on.

The Manned Cloud is almost 700ft long, 270ft wide and 170ft deep. It has a restaurant, a library, a lounge and a gym on the first deck. On the second level there will be 20 passenger rooms, terraces with panoramic windows, a spa and a bar room.
The airship is powered by a giant rear propeller and also has two further engines pointing downwards for vertical take-off.

Who Invented the Credit Card?

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Friday, April 11, 2008 0 comments
A credit card is an automatic way of offering credit to a consumer.
Credit is a method of selling goods or services without the buyer having cash in hand. A credit card is only an automatic way of offering credit to a consumer. Today, every credit card carries an identifying number that speeds shopping transactions. Imagine what a credit purchase would be like without it, the sales person would have to record your identity, billing address, and terms of repayment.

According to Encyclopedia Britannica, "the use of credit cards originated in the United States during the 1920s, when individual firms, such as oil companies and hotel chains, began issuing them to customers." However, references to credit cards have been made as far back as 1890 in Europe. Early credit cards involved sales directly between the merchant offering the credit and credit card, and that merchant's customer.

Around 1938, companies started to accept each other's cards. Today, credit cards allow you to make purchases with countless third parties.
The Shape of Credit Cards
Credit cards were not always been made of plastic. There have been credit tokens made from metal coins, metal plates, and celluloid, metal, fiber, paper, and now mostly plastic cards.
First Bank Credit Card
The inventor of the first bank issued credit card was John Biggins of the Flatbush National Bank of Brooklyn in New York. In 1946, Biggins invented the "Charge-It" program between bank customers and local merchants. Merchants could deposit sales slips into the bank and the bank billed the customer who used the card.

Diners Club Credit Card
In 1950, the Diners Club issued their credit card in the United States. The Diners Club credit card was invented by Diners' Club founder Frank McNamara and it was intended to pay restaurant bills. A customer could eat without cash at any restaurant that would accept Diners' Club credit cards. Diners' Club would pay the restaurant and the credit card holder would repay Diners' Club. The Diners Club card was at first technically a charge card rather than a credit card since the customer had to repay the entire amount when billed by Diners Club.

American Express issued their first credit card in 1958. Bank of America issued the BankAmericard (now Visa) bank credit card later in 1958.

The Popularity of Credit Cards
Credit cards were first promoted to traveling salesmen (more common in that era) for use on the road. By the early 1960s, more companies offered credit cards, advertising them as a time-saving device rather than a form of credit. American Express and MasterCard became huge successes overnight.

By the mid-'70s, the U.S. Congress begin regulating the credit card industry by banning such practices as the mass mailing of active credit cards to those who had not requested them. However, not all regulations have been as consumer friendly. In 1996, the U.S. Supreme Court in Smiley vs. Citibank lifted restrictions on the amount of late penalty fees a credit card company could charge. Deregulation has also allowed very high interest rates to be charged.

First European" Confirmed to Be 1.2 Million Years Old

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Thursday, April 10, 2008 0 comments

An analysis of an ancient jaw containing teeth has confirmed that humans reached Western Europe well over a million years ago, far earlier than previously thought.

The prehistoric fossil was excavated last June at Atapuerca in northern Spain, along with a previously reported tooth and stone tools used for butchering meat.

At the time, scientists announced that they had dated the separate tooth to 1.2 million years ago but that more research was needed before the find could be reported in a scientific journal.

The new study of the jaw confirms that the "first Europeans" arrived well over a million years ago, reports the archaeological team—led by Eudald Carbonell of the Rovira i Virgili University in Tarragona, Spain—in the latest issue of the journal Nature.

The jaw's owner has been labeled a Homo antecessor—a species first named in 1997 based on other human fossils found at Atapuerca. The sex isn't known, but the new human was likely aged between 30 and 40 at the time of death.

"Since we now know those [1997] fossils date to 900,000 [years ago], the time difference is not great, and, provisionally at least, I think it's logical to assign the mandible to Homo antecessor," said dig co-director José Maria Bermúdez de Castro of the National Research Center on Human Evolution in Burgos, Spain.

The new findings suggest that H. antecessor was most probably unique to Europe, the researchers say.

The Worlds First Dynamic Architecture

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Thursday, April 10, 2008 0 comments
The Dynamic Architecture building, which will be constantly in motion changing its shape, will be able to generate electric energy for itself as well as for other buildings. Forty-eight wind turbines fitted between each rotating floors as well as the solar panels positioned on the roof of the building will produce energy from wind and the sunlight, with no risk of pollution. The total energy produced by this inbuilt ‘powerhouse’ every year will be worth approximately seven million dollars.

Each turbine can produce 0.3 megawatt of electricity, compared to 1-1.5 megawatt generated by a normal vertical turbine (windmill). Considering that Dubai gets 4,000 wind hours annually, the turbines incorporated into the building can generate 1,200,000 kilowatt-hour of energy.

As average annual power consumption of a family is estimated to be 24,000 kilowatt-hour, each turbine can supply energy for about 50 families. The Dynamic Architecture tower in Dubai will be having 200 apartments and hence four turbines can take care of their energy needs. The surplus clean energy produced by the remaining 44 turbines can light up the neighborhood of the building.
However, taking into consideration that the average wind speed in Dubai is of only 16 km/h the architects may need to double the number of turbines to light up the building to eight. Still there will be 40 free turbines, good enough to supply power for five skyscrapers of the same size.
The horizontal turbines of the Dynamic Architecture building are simply inserted between the floors, practically invisible. They neither need a pole nor a concrete foundation. In addition, they are at zero distance from the consumer, which makes maintenance easier.

The modern design of the building and the carbon fiber special shape of the wings take care of the acoustics issues. Producing that much electric energy without any implication on the aesthetic aspect of the building is a revolutionary step in tapping alternative energy sources. Furthermore, this energy will have a positive impact on the environment and economy.

Google Adwords History

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Thursday, April 10, 2008 0 comments

AdWords is Google's flagship advertising product and main source of revenue. AdWords offers pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, and site-targeted advertising for both text and banner ads. The AdWords program includes local, national, and international distribution. Google's text advertisements are short, consisting of one title line and two content text lines. Image ads can be one of several different Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) standard sizes.

Google's AdWords division is based in Ann Arbor, Michigan.[1].

Pay-Per-Click advertisements (PPC)

Advertisers specify the words that should trigger their ads and the maximum amount they are willing to pay per click. When a user searches Google's search engine on www.google.com (or the relevant local/national google server [e.g. www.google.fr for France]), adverts (also known as creatives by Google) for relevant words are shown as "sponsored links" on the right side of the screen, and sometimes above the main search results.

The ordering of the paid listings depends on other advertisers' bids (PPC) and the "quality score" of all ads shown for a given search. The quality score is calculated by historical click-through rates and the relevance of an advertiser's ad text and keywords[1], as determined by Google. The quality score is also used by Google to set the minimum bids for an advertiser's keywords.[2]. The precise formula and meaning of relevance and its definition is in part secret to Google and whose parameters can be dynamically changed.

The auction mechanism that determines the order of the ads has been called a "generalized second price" auction. It is a variation of the Vickrey auction.

Sky homes and urban parkland - a new 'green heart' for surfers paradise

Marchese + Partners design for 'evo' has been formally submitted as an Expression of Interest to the Gold Coast City Council. The $850 million proposal was prepared for Portberg Properties and includes two residential towers (101-storeys and 70-storeys) set amongst a 7000m2 public park. When constructed the e1 tower will eclipse Q1, currently the tallest building on the Gold Coast. The development is made up of two towers that have an organic form - e1 and e2. e1 is a 101 storey residential tower, it penetrates the ground to allow a cascade of water to stream into the new transit centre and retail level below. At its peak a revolving restaurant is planned to give unobstructed views of the Gold Coast. e2 is a 70 storey tower twisting and curving out of the landscape. Both towers feature sky gardens that grow within the sculptured form of the buildings. The towers sprout from the substantial urban parkland proposed for the ground level of the site which will become the new 'green heart' of Surfers Paradise.

Track Your Stolen Laptop, then Get it Back

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Wednesday, April 09, 2008 0 comments

Absolute Software has just revealed an innovative method of tracking laptop and mobile computing devices using a firmware-based application. Called Computrace, the new asset management solution relies on a patented
piece of software that integrates into the computer's BIOS.

The new service will be integrated into Intel's upcoming Anti-Theft technology and will unlock new possibilities for the unfortunate users whose laptops have been stolen.

"For more than a decade, Absolute Software has single-handedly created and developed the market for BIOS-persistent, Internet-based tracking of mobile computers. Computrace is also capable of remotely deleting data and physically recovering lost or stolen computers – assisting customers in complying with data privacy regulations," said John Livingston, Chairman and CEO of Absolute Software.

Absolute and Intel will closely collaborate to integrate the asset management application, data protection and computer theft recovery services in the chip manufacturer's Anti-Theft Technology. The service will enhance the anti-theft security technology that is expected to come pre-integrated in the upcoming Centrino 2 mobile platform.

The Computrace Software Agent comes already included in the motherboard's BIOS. At the moment, a wide range of BIOS manufacturers support this function, therefore there will be no compatibility issues or a limited number of implementers. Users can activate Computrace with the purchase of a one- to four-year subscription.

When the notebook is stolen, the Computrace software sends a specific signal over the Internet to the monitoring center. According to the company, the signal is discrete and will not make the thief suspicious. The notebook provides critical information regarding its location, which allows law enforcement agencies to come and pick it up.

According to the company, the Computrace technology has played a key role in the recovery of more than 5,000 lost or stolen computers belonging to its subscribers.

The Story behind the Olympic Torch

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Tuesday, April 08, 2008 0 comments

2008 Beijing Olympic Torch

The Olympic Flame, Olympic Fire, Olympic Torch, Olympic Light, Olympic Eye, and Olympic Sun are all names for an important symbol of the Olympic Games. Commemorating the theft of fire from the Greek god Zeus by Prometheus, its origins lie in ancient Greece, when a fire was kept burning throughout the celebration of the ancient Olympics. The fire was reintroduced at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, and it has been part of the modern Olympic Games ever since. The modern torch relay was introduced by Joseph Goebbels, as part of an effort to turn the games into a glorification of the Third Reich.

Usage

The Olympic Torch today is ignited several months before the opening celebration of the Olympic Games at the site of the ancient Olympics in Olympia, Greece. Eleven women, representing the roles of priestesses, perform a ceremony in which the torch is kindled by the light of the Sun, its rays concentrated by a parabolic mirror.

The Olympic Torch Relay ends on the day of the opening ceremony in the central stadium of the Games. The final carrier is often kept secret until the last moment, and is usually a sports celebrity of the host country. The final bearer of the torch runs towards the cauldron, usually placed at the top of a grand staircase, and then uses the torch to start the flame in the stadium. It is considered a great honour to be asked to light the Olympic Flame. After being lit, the flame continues to burn throughout the celebration of the Olympics and is extinguished at the end of the closing ceremony of the Games.

History
For the ancient Greeks, fire had divine connotations — it was thought to have been stolen from the gods by Prometheus. Therefore, fire was also present at many of the sanctuaries in Olympia, Greece. A fire permanently burned on the altar of Hestia in Olympia, Greece. During the Olympic Games, which honored Zeus, additional fires were lit at his temple and that of his wife, Hera. The modern Olympic flame is ignited at the site where the temple of Hera used to stand.

The Olympic Flame from the ancient games was reintroduced during the 1928 Olympic Games when an employee of the Electric Utility of Amsterdam called Gerhard Herlitz lit for the first time the flame of the Olympic Games in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. In 1928, the flame burnt in the Marathon Tower of the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam. And after so many years finally after visiting all previous Olympic cities and finally it returned to Athens for the 2004 olympic.

But this year problem is still going on i lightning of the torch because of the Tibet Controversy and China's role behind it.

UFO House for Sale

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Tuesday, April 08, 2008 0 comments

Ever wanted to live in a flying saucer? Now you can!

If you have at least $100.000 that is, that’s the starting price for this odd looking UFO-shaped house. It is for sale on Ebay so look it up if you can afford it. It’s based in Chattanooga, Tennessee and it was built by the late Curtis W. King because he liked to build unusual things.

The current owner, only had it for four months and he didn’t comment on why he wanted to sell it, but it might have something to do with the interior design options, the side walls are very very short and the ceiling, as you can imagine, is very curved. I wouldn’t want to live there, even though it’s equipped with everything a normal home needs. But then again I’m not that fond of UFOs.

Boy answered, 'I'm too smart for the first-grade. My sister is in the third-grade and I'm smarter than she is! I think I should be in the 4th Grade!'

Madam had enough. She took the Boy to the principal's office. While the Boy waited in the outer office, madam explained to the principal what the situation was. The principal told Madam he would give the boy a test and if he failed to answer any of his
questions he was to go back to the first-grade and behave. She agreed.

the Boy was brought in and the conditions were explained to him and he agreed to take the test.

Principal: 'What is 3 x 3?'
Boy.: '9'.

Principal: 'What is 6 x 6?'
Boy.: '36'.

And so it went with every question the principal thought a 4th grade should know. The principal looks at Madam and tells her, 'I think Boy can go to the 4th grade.'

Madam says to the principal, 'I have some of my own questions.

Can I ask him ?' The principal and Boy both agreed.

Madam asks, 'What does a cow have four of that I have only two of'?

Boy, after a moment 'Legs.'

Madam: 'What is in your pants that you have but I do not have?'

Boy.: 'Pockets.'

Madam: What starts with a C and ends with a T, is hairy, oval,
delicious and contains thin whitish liquid?

Boy.: Coconut

Madam: What goes in hard and pink then comes out soft And sticky?

The principal's eyes open really wide and before he could stop the answer, Boy was taking charge.

Boy.: Bubblegum

Madam: What does a man do standing up, a woman does sitting down and a dog does on three legs?

The principal's eyes open really wide and before he could stop the answer...

Boy.: Shake hands

Madam: You stick your poles inside me. You tie me down to get me up. I get wet before you do.

Boy.: Tent

Madam: A finger goes in me. You fiddle with me when you're bored. The best man always has me first.

The Principal was looking restless, a bit tense and took one large Patiala Vodka peg.

Boy.: Wedding Ring

Madam: I come in many sizes. When I'm not well, I drip. When you blow me, you feel good.

Boy.: Nose

Madam: I have a stiff shaft. My tip penetrates. I come with a quiver.

Boy.: Arrow

Madam: What word starts with a 'F' and ends in 'K' that means lot of heat and excitement?

Meet the smallest girl of the world

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Tuesday, April 08, 2008 0 comments
A teenager from India who stands at a tiny 1ft 11in (58cm) tall is the smallest girl in the world.
Jyoti Amge, 14, is shorter than the average two-year-old child and only weighs 11lb (5kg).
She has a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia and won't grow any taller than her current height.
Due to her size, Jyoti has to have clothes and jewellery made for her. She sleeps in a tiny bed and uses special plates and cutlery to eat, as normal-sized utensils are too big.
Despite this, she goes to a regular school in Nagpur, central India, where she has her own small desk and chair, and her classmates treat her like any other student.

Jyoti also shares common interests with other teenagers, with a love for DVDs and fashionable dresses.
She said: 'I am proud of being small. I love all the attention I get. I'm not scared of being small and I don't regret it.
'I'm just the same as other people. I eat like you, dream like you. I don't feel any different.'

Jyoti is treated like a mini-celebrity in her home town, where people flock to meet her and some even treat her like a goddess.

She will even be releasing an album with her favourite Indian pop star, the bhangra/rap star Mika Singh.

Her mum, Ranjana Amge, 45, said: 'When Jyoti was born, she seemed quite normal. We came to know about her disorder when she was five.
'We consulted a specialist and he said she will be this size all of her life. Jyoti is small, yet cute, and we love her very much.'
Jyoti is ambitious and hopes to work as a Bollywood actress one day.
She said: 'I would love to work in a big city like Mumbai, act in films and travel to London and America.

'I'm proud of being small. I love all the attention I get because of it.'
Her dad, Kishanji Amge, 52, said: 'I can't separate myself from her even for a single day. I love her very much.
'She makes me proud. Lots of gurus come to see and bless her. They pray for her happiness and long life.'

AdSense Terms and Conditions Updated

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Monday, April 07, 2008 0 comments

AdSense users are up for some "I Agree" clicking in the near future, if they want to continue using Google’s service, as one of the general changes in the terms and conditions is looming around the corner. The development of the Internet, Web 2.0 alongside it, is constantly demanding new technologies and services to be pushed up front by every company in order to keep up with the times and trends.

The upcoming changes are Google’s way of making sure that there’s no
legal ambiguity between any aspects of the AdSense program, and furthermore to assure that every possible aspect of the projects in development is already covered when they hit the Web.

Two broad categories will be targeted by the new rules and regulations. The first has the future products and features at its core, and this comes right as the DoubleClick acquisition will finally receive the big OK from the European Union regulators, the last to have second thoughts about the non-monopolistic approach to advertising that Google is hinting at. Upcoming ad formats and mediums are the ones pointed at, such as Gadget Ads, which offers the option to deliver the Mountain View-based company’s money-making content offline.

The changes to this section aren’t grand in design, just re-writes of the old terms and conditions designed to cover the possibility that future products be priced, paid or managed differently than the current ones, Julie Beckmann, AdSense Publisher Support, writes in a post on the Google AdSense Blog.

Category number two includes the troublesome privacy requirements, an area Google has always had problems with. Just last week, the EU Article 29 Working Party announced that Search Engines have to shorten the time the cookies are active, among other things. Right in the heels of this decision, the announcement about the update to the terms and conditions comes as a natural next step. Publishers will be obliged to notify their users about all the data-collecting beacons and cookies delivered in the ad-serving process, Beckman points out.

The changes don’t limit to those mentioned above and the whole process is long and tiring. However, reviewing the updated information is a must for AdSense publishers, if they are to keep using the product and services abiding the law. There's no need to skim through the modifications though, the date until they have to be accepted (or not) is the 25th of May.

12 Mutual Fund terms one must know

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Monday, April 07, 2008 0 comments
As we probably know, a mutual fund is an investment that pools together money from a number of investors. It then uses professionals to manage and invest this money with the aim of achieving a return.

The mutual funds industry is regulated by the Securities and Exchange Board of India. Here are some terms that one needs to understand-

1. AMC
An Asset Management Company is the fund house or company that manages money.

The mutual fund is a trust registered under the Indian Trust Act. It is initiated by a sponsor. A sponsor is a person who acts alone or with a corporate to establish a mutual fund. The sponsor then appoints an AMC to manage the investment, marketing, accounting and other functions pertaining to the fund.

For instance, ABN AMRO Trustee (India) Private Limited is appointed as the trustee to the ABN AMRO Mutual Fund. ABN AMRO Asset Management (India) Limited is appointed as its investment manager. Various funds with different objectives can be floated under the umbrella of one parent. So ABN AMRO Equity Fund, ABN AMRO Opportunities Fund and ABN AMRO Flexi Debt Fund are all independent schemes of ABN AMRO Mutual Fund. They are managed by the ABN AMRO AMC.

2. NAV

The Net Asset Value is the price of a unit of a fund. When a fund comes out with an NFO, it is priced Rs. 10. Later, depending on the value, of the investments, this price could rise or fall.

3. Load

This is a fee that is charged when you buy or sell the units of a fund. When you buy the units of a fund, you pay a percentage of it as a fee. This is known as the entry load.

For example, one is investing Rs. 10000 and the entry load is 2%. That means he pays Rs. 200 as the entry load and Rs. 9800 is invested in the fund. Now assume, he is selling the units of his fund. And the Rs. 10000 he invested initially is now Rs. 15000. Let’s further assume the exit load is 2%. So he pays Rs 300 and gets back Rs. 14700. Generally, if funds charge an entry load, they will not charge an exit load. Or vice versa. Only one of the loads is charged. The load is a percentage of the NAV.

4. Portfolio

This is a term given to all the investments made by the fund as well as the amount held in cash.

5.Corpus

Let’s assume a very small mutual fund has an initial investment of 1000 units and each unit is worth Rs. 10. Hence, the total amount with the fund is Rs. 10000. This is referred to as the corpus. Later, some other investors invest Rs. 2000. Now the corpus will be Rs. (12000 (Rs. 10000+ Rs. 2000). The total amount invested is called the corpus or the total amount of money invested in the fund.

6. AUM

Assets Under Management is the total value of all the investments currently being managed by the fund. Let’s say the corpus is Rs. 12000 but, due to a rise in the price of the shares it has invested in, the value of the units has increased. So the Rs. 12000 invested is now worth Rs. 15000. This figure is referred to as AUM.

7. Diversified Equity Mutual Fund

This is a mutual fund that invests in stocks of various companies in various sectors.

8. ELSS

Equity Linked Saving Schemes are diversified equity mutual funds with a tax benefit under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act. To avail of the tax benefit, your money must be locked up for at least three years.

9. Balance Fund

A fund that invests in both equity (shares) and debt (fixed return investment) is known as balance fund.

10. Debt Fund

These are funds that invest in fixed return investments like bonds. A liquid fund is one that invests money in market instruments; these are fixed return investments of a very short tenure.

11.NFO

A New Fund Offering is the term given to a new mutual scheme.

12. SIP

A Systematic Investment Plan refers to periodic investing in a mutual fund. Every month or every three months, the investor will have to commit to putting in a fixed amount. This will go towards the purchase of units. Let’s say every month you commit to investing, say Rs. 1000 in your fund. At the end of a year, you would have invested Rs. 12000. If the NAV on the

What will be the Perfect keywords in Adsense for your blog???

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Sunday, April 06, 2008 0 comments
If you are marketing your site on the search engines, the keywords you choose for your site are crucial. Choosing the right keywords for your site should be the first step in search engine marketing.

The key to choosing the best keywords is to choose keywords that are properly targeted, high volume, and low competition.

Targeting

When choosing your keywords, choose keywords that will give you prospects that are likely to buy your product. For example, if you are selling Oriental Rugs, the keyword “rugs” would be an okay keyword. The keyword “oriental rugs” would be better, and the keyword “buy oriental rugs” would be ideal.

Search volume

When choosing a keyword, you'll want to know how many people are searching for that particular keyword. The easiest way to do this is to use the Yahoo Search Marketing keyword suggestion tool. This tool will tell you how many people on the Yahoo network searched for that keyword last month.

Another good tool is the Digital Point keyword suggestion tool, which will give you data from the Yahoo network and from Wordtracker.

Competition Level

The competition level for a particular keyword can be a little tougher to determine. For PPC marketing, the Yahoo View Bids Tool is very helpful. This tool will show you what advertisers are bidding per click for a keyword. This tool is also helpful for SEO, but there are other ways to determine the SEO competitiveness of a keyword.

Using Google, you can get quite a bit of data that can help you determine how many websites have been optimized for keyword, and how well they have been optimized. Use Google to check on:

How many sites are returned for “keyword”
How many sites are returned for “allintitle: keyword”

Then, use Yahoo or MSN, to see how many backlinks the top ranked sites for the keyword have.

Evolution Internet Ltd offers a range of Keyword Research related services.

Cabbage Chair (Rare and Amazing Images)

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Saturday, April 05, 2008 0 comments

Nendo has designed a new chair made of waste paper from the pleated fabric industry.

The paper is wrapped into a cylinder and cut vertically half way so you can peel it one layer at a time.

The chair was designed for the XXIst Century Man exhibition which will be at 21_21 Design Sight in Tokyo from 30 March to 6 July 2008.

To make the paper more durable resins were added during production. They also give paper the ability to remember forms, and the pleats themselves give the chair elasticity and a springy resilience, giving the seater a comfortable experience.

The production is so simple it may not be long till we are able to buy it

World's First Mobile Phone-Dynatac 8000X

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Saturday, April 05, 2008 0 comments
These days we often speculate about what we did before we had a mobile phone. Well, before 6 March, 1983, the thought of being able to communicate anytime, anyplace, anywhere hadn''t even begun to surface in most people''s minds when Motorola launched the DynaTAC1 8000X.
For years Motorola had been at the forefront of portable communications. In 1930 they had produced the first commercially successful car radio, which they developed into the two-way radios which became standard for the allies during the Second World War. After the war they then developed pagers, car radiotelephones and radio transponders. As a result it was Motorola technology that relayed Neil Armstrong''s famous words from the Moon in 1969. However, in 1968 the next breakthrough had already been made. Based on ''cells'' that would enable the same radio frequencies to be reused simultaneously in other areas, they started to look into the possibility of mobile cellular phones.

Birth of the Mobile

Over the next 15 years $100 million was invested in the research and development of cellular technology. The DynaTAC 8000X weighed 785g (28 ounces) and measured a colossal 300x44x89mm (13x1.75x3.5"). It only boasted one hour of talk time and eight hours of standby time, so that if you wanted it on 24 hours a day you would have to charge up three sets of batteries every day. However, it only had an LED display instead of an LCD, which was only just starting to be used in the digital watches of the time. There was a 150mm (6") aerial protruding from the top of it and you could also manage to save the princely total of 30 numbers in the memory of the phone.
The young rich kid who had everything, in 1983, could be seen with a mobile phone, that is if they were able to pay the $3995 for the privilege. One problem you might have encountered though was that there was very limited signal coverage to enable you to use it. So a lot of the time it was mainly used for posing2. The phone may have resembled a brick in size but by the end of 1984 there were 300,000 users worldwide. It may be a mere drop in the ocean compared to the 1.2 billion mobile phone users today but at that price it is an impressive number.

Moving On

Since then of course mobiles have become cheaper, lighter and longer lasting. They have gained more features including phone books, calendars, games, internet access, cameras and now even video. They have become an essential everyday item in most developed nations. Before they came along we all carried our emergency coins to call from a payphone. Now the mobile''s rise has led to the demise of the familiar payphone on many of our street corners. The DynaTAC 8000X is a dinosaur in today''s eyes but a landmark on the road to today''s highly connected world.
It may be seen as a great step in personal identity or maybe the last breach of personal privacy but the day of the mobile phone has come since that first ''brick'' of a ''phone in 1983. Where next is up to the imaginations of those who want to give us even greater access.

Three Most Environmentally Friendly Beers

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Friday, April 04, 2008 0 comments

1. This is– personal testimony– the best beer of the bunch, even if it’s the “least creative” approach: Brooklyn Brewery, which powers their Brooklyn headquarters and brewery 100% on wind power. No offsets, nothing like that– just real sustainable energy, and all the power you need to produce 1.6 million gallons of beer every year. It’s estimated that they save 335,000 pounds of carbon dioxide from going into the atmosphere every year.
2. New Belgium Brewery, in Fort Collins, Colorado, also uses wind power, but only for about 70 percent of their output–the remaining thirty comes from a process where they reclaim their waste water, cultivate bacteria, and then combust the methane to provide power for the plant. The water is then cleaned, used in the plant again for cooling, and treated before being pumped back to the city for use.
3. Coors? Really? Really. The giant may not be the MOST environmentally-friendly operation, but because they have such a massive output, their move towards environmentalism is remarkable. First, in the 1950s, Coors was the original aluminum beer car, enticing consumers to recycle what once held their libations instead of simply throwing away the steel cans that came before. Then there’s the ethanol. You may not believe it, but ethanol is a byproduct of brewing, and Coors, seeing an opportunity to make money as well as a difference, has started selling theirs to Colorado refineries, turning what was considered waste into E85.

Saudi Arabian man catches daughter on Facebook, murders her

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Friday, April 04, 2008 0 comments

A man from Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, beat and then fatally shot his daughter after catching her using Facebook to conduct a conversation with a man, according to reports. More than 30,000 Saudi Arabians use Facebook, but religious figures such as Saudi preacher Sheikh Ali al-Maliki condemn the site as a hotbed of lustful activity. "Facebook is a door to lust and young women and men are spending more on their mobile phones and the Internet than they are spending on food," al-Maliki said in a recent TV interview.

Now think twice before you log into a social networking site....

Come home Early Tomorrow (Short Story)

Posted by Teen Tweens Admin On Thursday, April 03, 2008 0 comments
Son: "Daddy, may I ask you a question"

Daddy: "Yeah sure, what it is?"

Son: "Dad, how much do you make an hour"

Daddy: "That's none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?"

Son: "I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an
hour?"

Daddy: "I make Rs. 500 an hour"

"Oh", the little boy replied, with his head down.

Looking up, he said, "Dad, may I please borrow Rs. 300?"

The father was furious,
"if the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money
to buy a silly toy or other nonsense, then march yourself to your room
and go to bed.
Think why you are being so selfish. I work hard everyday for such this
childish behavior"

The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door.

The man
sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy's
questions.

How dare he ask such questions only to get some money?

After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down,
and started to think:

"May be there was something he really needed to buy with that

Rs. 300 and he really didn't ask for money very often!"

The man went to the door of little boy's room and opened the door.
"Are you asleep, son?" He asked.
"No daddy, I'm awake," replied the boy.

"I've been thinking, may be I was too hard on you earlier", said the
man, "It's been a long day and I took out my aggravation on you.
Here's the Rs.300 you asked for"

The little boy sat straight up, smiling "oh thank you dad!" He yelled.

Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled some crippled up notes.
The man, seeing that the boy already had money,
started to get angry
again.

The little boy slowly counted out his money, then looked up at his
father.

"Why do you want money if you already had some?" the father grumbled.

"Because I didn't have enough, but now I do," the little boy replied.

"Daddy I have Rs. 500 now. Can I buy an hour of your time?

Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you"

MORAL OF THE STORY

It's just a short reminder to all of you working so hard in life.
We should not let time slip through our fingers without having spent
some time with those who really matter to us, those close to our hearts.

If we die tomorrow,
the company that we are working for could easily replace us in a matter
of days.

But the family & friends we leave behind will feel the loss for the

rest of
their lives.
And come to think of it, we pour ourselves more into work than to our
family....
